It is sobering and dismaying to see from this article that so much of our local and regional healthcare is in the control of the Catholic Church, and that the Church is trying to expand its control even more.

I believe that this president is unique among all US presidents in disregarding the public good, in flouting laws and norms, in causing serious harms to our institutions of government, and must be impeached. Even if the Senate doesn't remove him, that shouldn't stop us from pursuing the process for these reasons:
1. If we don't impeach for this behavior, then what behavior would we impeach for?
2. If we don't impeach him, then aren't we tacitly accepting this behavior?
3. I get that the Republicans don't care about truth or the institutions of government that impede them, but we do care about those institutions. If we don't impeach, then we are not truly valuing the institutions.
4. The only way to move the Senate, however unlikely, is to sway public opinion. Impeachment is the only way to bring out all the dirt that could do this; we've seen such stonewalling over the past months that shows we need more legal pressure.
5. This case is more like Nixon than Clinton. Nixon was misusing the office, acting against the public good for political gain. Clinton was sullying the office but didn't go against the public good in his misbehavior which is why public sentiment went against the Republicans. Trump is arguably doing both, but is clearly not acting in the public interest.

I thought that things were moving along at a reasonable pace, but I've changed my mind; our representatives need us to push them harder.

I've just called my three representatives, and said something like this: "My name is David Hirsch and I live in Bellingham, WA. I am calling to voice my support for the impeachment process, even if the Senate is not going to remove the President. Regardless of the politics, it is the right thing to do for the country."

I didn't have to wait. They all picked up on the second ring. Very quick and easy - faster than an email, even.

Please consider doing the same.

Here's how to find your senators and reps:

Just saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, partly because Hannah Schell called out the Chatsworth connection, which made the movie particularly resonant. It definitely took me back to my childhood! All my Chatsworth High people, you have to stay for the KHJ radio jingle at the end of the credits.

And it was a good movie, too, with interesting ruminations on the struggles associated with growing older in one’s career, struggles that I had to imagine Tarantino has experienced as he grows older, and which I suppose we all deal with eventually.

The cross-trench was for Plan A, which I had to ditch after seeing how hard it was to bore under the sidewalk. Ended up with about 10 feet of trench I didn't use. :(
Since Friday I've been working on running new power to the workshop underground. Dug for 15 hours over the weekend to make about 40 feet of 18" deep trench through rocky, tree-root-laden ground, bored under a sidewalk, and the kids helped pull cable through conduit tonight. Getting close to a completed project!

I'm pretty sure I haven't been to the home store more than about 11 times altogether.

Looking for something good to watch with my two choir kids, we just watched the Glee pilot. A couple of observations:

1. It seems like it wasn't that long ago, but I definitely watched it with commercials, on broadcast TV, which is something at this point I haven't done regularly in years.

2. Having an iPhone was mentioned offhandedly as a prestige / status symbol. Oh, how the mighty hath fallen.

3. The social media that was important at the time was, apparently, MySpace. Just wow.

4. Makes me sad for Cory Montieth.

Notes from Vegas, Day 2:
Today was mostly hiking at Red Rocks. Fantastic weather, even a little cool. Had one of the best visitors centers I’ve seen! Great design, interesting activities, good geology, ecology, and biology. Plus live tortoises!

Had a few kid attitude moments, but the hike ended up being great, with a nice little spring at the end as a reward.

This evening we saw some cool sights at Caesar’s, including the spiral escalators and the Atlantis show.

Finished off the night with an impressive milkshake that included cotton candy, rock candy, a lollipop, and more.

Tomorrow’s plan: fun activities and a show!
Notes from Vegas, day 1:

Kids were upset and scandalized by the roaming packs of semi-clothed “showgirls” pestering tourists to take pictures with them. Made the first hour of walking the Strip difficult.

Highlight of the day was the last thing: getting custom-printed M&Ms at the M&M store. Also: tried weird new (proposed) peanut M&M flavors: coconut, English toffee, and jalapeño!

A billboard had a jokey “Today’s safe word is ...” and I got to explain safe words and had to stray into the existence of BDSM in the world. ;/

Sawyer wasn’t into the amazing Bellagio display, but really wanted to get a picture of the super-stretch limo.

Thanks to the loving generosity of Banu Gibson and David Boeddinghaus, who flew in from New Orleans, and Katy Cavera and Scott Yawger, who are here in Los Angeles, our home was filled to overflowing with wonderful music. It was enhanced by all the musicians who joined in: CJ Sams and his lovely wife, Andy and Dawn Comeau, Ken Dickey, Ed Weiss, Jim Flynn. I’m sure I’m missing some of you and I apologize. But the evening turned out just as we wished - an informal jam where everyone could do as they wanted. They could play, clap, listen. Our home rang with incredible tunes. Ed played all evening and just soaked up the good wishes that were sent his way to celebrate 80 years.

While I think Trump is wrong to revoke Acosta's pass, and I think the judge is right to revert that while the court case moved forward, I don't actually think that CNN should win this case. In what way does any journalist have a right to access the President or any events held in the White House? I don't see what law guarantees such access.

If Trump wants to give a cold shoulder to unfriendly news outlets, he should be punished by the political process, not a legal one. It's not as if anything useful is said at these events anyway.

And the Due Process argument is off-point. As I argued strongly when my conservative friends suggested that Kavanaugh was somehow being denied Due Process rights, the Constitution only guarantees those rights in criminal proceedings, when the person is subject to denial of life, liberty, or property. Not when they don't get to do their job in the room they want to do it in.

That said, I fully support any pressure the political process can bring to bear on Trump to keep all the major news outlets in the room and participating equally.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/16/media/cnn-trump-lawsuit-hearing/index.html

[EDIT/UPDATE] - I was convinced by wiser folks that I was wrong about this. I stand by my position that no journalist has a right to access the White House press room, but it turns out that they do have a Due Process right to not have such access revoked capriciously. Thanks, @[1363731332:2048:Gerry Coleman]!

CONGRATULATIONS Americans!! The 2018 ACA (Affordable Care Act) enrollment period is OPEN (Nov 1-Dec 15). You're not seeing advertising about the enrollment window online or on TV because the Affordable Care Act’s advertising budget was cut by 90 percent. Fortunately, your friends are posting this and using the word "congratulations" so it gets posted more frequently in Newsfeed by FB algorithms.

Please copy and paste (don't share) on your own timeline, if you want to help spread the word. When they say "let Obamacare fail on its own" don't think for a second they aren't using every underhanded tactic they can to MAKE it fail. This year, there are many plans that will have lower premiums for those that receive subsidies. Unfortunately there are higher premiums for others because of moves by the administration to sabotage the ACA.

Paypal should probably not be trusted. They use SMS-based two-factor authentication, which is not secure. All financial entities should support strong MFA, which Paypal does not. As convenient as Paypal is, I think I will be disconnecting it from my other accounts to prevent compromise of Paypal leading to compromise of my credit card and bank accounts.

Zelle is no better (sorry, Dad).

Looking at other options. It's crazy that with the heavy competition in this area, nobody appears to be competing on security features.

Update: Google Pay is the right way at this time. It supports good 2FA, location tracking to deter fraud, and other security measures.

This is a very good, well-reasoned argument. Let's find terms other than "treason". "Collusion" is a good one: it clearly gets under the President's skin, and is supported by the evidence. By siding with Russia against the US, he is colluding with them to help them accomplish their aims of harming our democracy and our national interests.

I knew there was something pithy I wanted to express based on Trump today, and this was it.

Somebody should tell the immigrants in detention camps that they just have to say, in the strongest possible terms, that they didn’t break the law, and then Trump will believe them and let them go, right? Doesn’t matter what law enforcement agencies say, so long as they claim innocence strongly enough, it appears.

Highlight from yesterday: swimming with manta rays! We were all holding onto surfboard/PVC floats at the surface. There were scuba divers down below, and the lights bring the plankton into the water column at night, luring the manta rays to the site. In this video, Ami (@[100004013551451:2048:LoLo]) and @[1076441898:2048:Jeremy] are on one side of me, and Laurel is on the other. Laurel asked me to make her a birthday cake. I decided to challenge myself. Three-layer chocolate cake with chocolate-chip pastry cream filling, swiss meringue buttercream ombré frosting, and fondant seascape with 12-tentacle jellyfish holding the candles. Tree trimming! Love this family. Girls are decorating; Sawyer is kibitzing. Laurel made this ornament of the four of us. So sweet.

So I got my MoviePass (https://www.moviepass.com/) card yesterday. They must be hammered. I couldn't check in to actually use it today, and I tried to contact support but just got crickets in response. To be fair, it was Friday at 6:30, so I suppose they might be hammered even if they weren't dealing with an onslaught of new customers.
Still willing to cut them some slack. Word is they will reimburse anyway, and have send them my receipt.

We had the best backpacking trip! The kids' first real backpacking trip ever - they carried all their clothes, sleeping gear, tools (pocketknives, etc.) and snacks. Two nights near Lake Ann with some fantastic memories to keep and share:
- More wild blueberries than anyone could possibly eat, right at our campsite.
- A horde of frogs ("myriad"? "swarm"?) right near our campsite.
- Negotiating a talus slope to get to play in a late-summer patch of snow and make slushies.
- Catching their first fish ever! (Sawyer-1; Laurel-3)
- Working hard to get to some great views and learning how fun hiking can be!

I am honestly not trying to eclipse-gloat here, but to suggest that you recalibrate your expectations. The difference between 99% and 100% is qualitative, not quantitative. If you figured that most of an eclipse is mostly as good as totality, you are just wrong. Go see totality in 2024.

My big girl, ready to walk herself to school, solo, for the first time.
Today was so strange: I've been responsible for this human in a very concrete way for the past 11 years. I've had to be within sight of her, or delegate that responsibility, pretty much every minute for 11 years. And then, today, we let her be alone to get ready in the morning for an hour, and walk herself across Fairhaven to the library and hang out at the library for an hour. It's jarring to have such a dramatic change in parenting posture literally overnight. Parenting whiplash. Here she is after the first day of middle school, looking very mature and self-confident.

So now I get why people do crazy stuff like charter eclipse-following planes. Next one is April 8, 2024. Max totality is about 4:28. Mazatlán is about 4:17, but clouds are likely: "The month of April in Mazatlán experiences essentially constant cloud cover, with the percentage of time that the sky is overcast or mostly cloudy remaining about 43% throughout the month." (https://weatherspark.com/m/3239/4/Average-Weather-in-April-in-Mazatlán-Mexico) Fredericksburg, TX is pretty much on the center line. Very likely to be clear weather in April. Cute little tourist town. @[1147284285:2048:Judy] and @[100005137276289:2048:Ed] : you've been there. Bought a tablecloth as I recall.

Lets be really clear about this "both sides" ordeal....if you are one of those "fine people" marching that morning, and you see nazis marching along side of you, and you keep on marching the rest of that day, you are no longer a fine person....you are a nazi sympathizer.
Plain and simple.
And if Trump thinks "fine people" would attend an event where swastikas were proudly displayed, he is a nazi sympathizer too.

We'll see about this one... Hoping it's 10% as good as the books.

Regardless, I'm ambivalent as usual. Even a good movie will corrupt (no, take over) one's mental images from the book, and take what was mostly inchoate and make it a concrete, fixed vision. I loved Lord of The Rings movies, but I'll never think about those characters the way I did before the movies.

Ambivalent.

I get why setting up a back-channel to Russia is bad, ethically and politically. What I don't get is why it's bad for national security. "The Russians don't need to break into our communications - we're using theirs!"

But we (Jared) would be using their communications facilities....to talk to THEM. The Russians would be able to record that conversation regardless.

Someone explain to me.

It's been a great birthday so far: Laurel surprised me by playing Happy Birthday on her violin first thing this morning, then baked a sweet treat from scratch (flour, egg, water, and chopped up Samoas cookies: surprisingly good!). Today at dinner I asked Sawyer what he is going to be when he grows up. He first replied, "Well, what I think I'm going to be now is going to be different than what I will want to be later." So I asked him what he *wants* to be when he grows up, and he said, "I'm sure that what I will want to be is going to change, because I will have different experiences by then." (Seriously, he said this.) So, I asked him if he could choose anything right now, what would he choose? He started thinking...kept thinking...then got distracted. Never did answer my question. I'm going with politician.

I've been on the fence about this for months, but I've decided that Pence's malice is less bad for our country than Trump's disdain for democratic norms and institutions.

If you, like me, believe that Trump is an existential threat to our democracy, and that our democracy is worth sacrifices, then we need to be willing to accept Pence even if his religion-driven evil will be more effectively directed at harming some members of our society than Trump's toddler-in-a-china-shop blundering about.

The opportunity will come, sometime in the near future, when we as liberals will have the opportunity to say "But Pence is bad, too, maybe worse in some ways: if 45 is impeached, then we're stuck with Pence!" We should resist that temptation, because as bad as Pence may be, he is not a threat to democratic institutions and norms. Those democratic institutions are more valuable than (and in fact form the basis for) individual freedoms (esp. of equal treatment for LGBTQ) that Pence will threaten.

However, that's easy for me to say, because I'm not LGBTQ. What do my friends think about this? Morgan Rumpf? Cristin Moxy Castro-League?

That article (https://www.thenation.com/article/house-republicans-just-voted-to-eliminate-the-only-federal-agency-that-makes-sure-voting-machines-cant-be-hacked/) about the House Republicans abolishing the only body that can verify and improve voting machines is misleading. Here's the bill itself (https://cha.house.gov/bill/bill-terminate-election-assistance-commission) and it actually transfers the responsibility for testing and certifying voting machines to the Federal Election Commission.

There are lots of real problems in DC to freak out about. This is not one of them.

This is a formatted tweet storm from Kurt Eichenwald.

I am going to try to explain why there is so much outrage in the intelligence agencies about what Trump did on Saturday in his CIA speech. Imagine having a campaign rally at the National Cemetery. Or a cocktail fundraiser amid the grave markers of US soldiers in Normandy. This "event'' Trump held, purportedly to greet CIA employees, was in the Memorial Wall room, where 117 CIA employees who died in service to our country are honored. Many more have died, and it takes special approval to receive a star on the wall or be listed in the book, called the Book of Honor. Many of the names of the fallen will never be known, because their identities have to be kept secret even in death. Rarely is that room used for anything, but when it is, solemn nature of it is recognized. GW Bush was, I believe the first president to hold an event there in 2001, but it was exceedingly respectful and in keeping with the meaning of the room. The second major event was an appearance by Obama after the killing of Bin Laden, when he went to the CIA to thank the ppl there for their often anonymous sacrifices that led to that success in the fight against terrorism. Again, solemn and fitting with the meaning of the room. Both Bush and Obama paid deep homage to those honored in the book and by the stars. CIA employees listened respectfully, but did not turn the events into rallies. Then, Trump. He has the audacity to bring people from his team to cheer for him and sit in the front rows. I can't imagine CIA employees cheering and whooping it up at Memorial Wall. It would be like screaming "BOO-yah!" at a funeral .
Trump made a single, over-the-shoulder mention of the stars. But he spent most of his time griping about the media, bragging about the number of times he had been on the cover of Time Magazine, and complaining that everyone was lying about numbers at his inauguration and all the while, his professional cheerleaders who couldn't find their way to the CIA bathroom are sitting there, cheering for the many who apparently needs applause everywhere he goes.
It was an abomination, perhaps the most disrespectful thing I have ever seen done by any president in that kind of place.
I felt sure we would hear from former director Brennan pretty fast. Why? Because one of those stars on the wall belongs to a close friend of his who died in service of this country. And he knows who all the others are as well. For him, I'm sure, it was like watching someone having a picnic on the graves in the National Cemetery. And then the same Trump staff that was too lazy or stupid to do the advance work on the CIA trip, so that they knew the meaning of the wall, go on TV to attack Brennan as a partisan hack for wanting a room of such enormous meaning to be treated with the solemnity it deserves. And that is an important element here. I actually don't blame Trump for this horror show on Saturday. Few people outside of govmt know the meaning of the wall. That was his staff's job, and they clearly had no idea what they were sending Trump to do. No sane person would agree to send a cheering squad. They are incompetent. Worse, they are arrogant, and respond to others pointing out their undeniable errors by attacking and whining. No, anger at the dishonoring of patriots who died is not partisan. U don't want criticism? Do your jobs better and when u screw up, like u did by turning most solemn place in intel world as a rah-rah location, just admit it, apologize, and move on.

What do my conservative friends think of this? Should a promise that a candidate made over and over, a very clearly stated promise, be broken like this? Would that be okay if a Democrat did it? It's astounding that Trump would continue to lie about demonstrable facts (crowd sizes at inauguration). At the same time, I am heartened to see such an expression of outrage from our citizens across the country: far more than showed up in DC to support Trump. With Trump's day-1 approval the lowest in recorded history, I expect that this will be the start of an "unpresidented" popular uprising.

My conservative friends were *very* concerned about the vague, and sometimes nonsensical allegations of corruption before the election, so I'm surprised not to hear them being very upset by well-substantiated allegations such as this one. Perhaps their stand was never a principled one after all: maybe they just wanted their team to win at any cost? @[564571196:2048:Russ Granger]: want to speak out against this? I have heard many people agonizing over whether they should (or do) want Trump to fail as a President. One the one hand, don't we want successful leaders? On the other hand, here's what I think:

I emphatically want him to fail to ruin the country. I want him to be a president who sits in the Oval Office, gets to have big fancy state dinners, and is frustrated at every attempt to pursue harmful policies. Who gets to have all the trappings of the presidency and whose every attempt at getting something bad done is thwarted by an outpouring of grass-roots opposition, so that Congress votes everything down. I want every one of his unwise executive actions to result in such popular opposition that he recants. I want him to be a president who, after he's gone, history will mark as one who got very little done. That is the kind of failure I mean.

The conception of the president as pilot of the national airplane, one whose failure means the failure of the country, is a misguided one. The country has divided, decentralized government, which is one of our great strengths. Most of what keeps the country going is our democratic institutions: states, courts, cities, counties, and the bureaucracy at all levels. A president who can't get anything done has little effect on these institutions. However, a president who gets a lot done can potentially have a lot of negative effects. So, I definitely hope he fails, "big-league".

Finally, it appears very likely that the Verizon iPhone will be announced next week, with availability probably in early February! Now, the question is: how long can I keep from getting one, knowing that every moment of that period will be painful? Can I bear to wait for version 2, knowing that it will almost certainly have fewer bugs and more features? We'll see...
This feels like a message from a previous age of society. The pre-iPhone age. How did we even live back then?

To my conservative friends:

You were pretty upset about the possibility of individual voter fraud before November, but I haven't seen you speak out against the Russian meddling in our election. Is this because:
(A) You only care about "us" vs. "them", so if meddling benefits your side, it's just fine?
(B) You only care about meddling when it's on a voter-by-voter basis (voter fraud), rather than wholesale, affecting millions?
(C) You only care about UNdocumented meddling (voter fraud), rather than the documented kind?
(D) You don't believe the nation's intelligence agencies, because you personally know the details of this cyber-espionage situation better than those paid to figure this stuff out?
(E) You think it would be really awesome to be pwned by Russia?
(F) You are too busy with gift-giving to care about the integrity of our democracy?
(G) Some other reason?

Seriously, what gives? Russ? Others?

Hey, @[564571196:2048:Russ]. You have on many occasions stated your very strong belief that anything that compromises fair voting is to be objected to in the strongest possible terms. Given that belief, what is your take on this? It's circumstantial for sure, but is it worth looking into? If not, why not?

Here's a key quote: "The academics presented findings showing that in Wisconsin, Clinton received 7 percent fewer votes in counties that relied on electronic-voting machines compared with counties that used optical scanners and paper ballots."

This is amazing! I don't understand the physics, but it appears that the EM drive is a real thing. This could be the thing that actually enables long-distance space flights in the not-too-distant future. Here's the key finding: This drive, without even trying to optimize its performance, can exert a force of 1.2 mN/kW. Current space engines can do 60 mN/kW, but they require propellant, and this drive doesn't. Other propellantless technologies, such as light sails can only do around 0.005 mN/kW.

This is science fiction come to life, people!

This is happening here in Bellingham. I still have yet to see a single Trump supporter speaking out against this kind of thing. I see them telling progressives to stop protesting, to get over it, to give Trump a chance, to stop accusing Trump supporters of being racist or otherwise hateful, but not a single time have I yet heard them saying that these actions of a small fraction of them are wrong.

I've seen a number of folks posting maps that show where people voted for Clinton vs. Trump. Most of these suffer from the problem that there are big areas of the country with few humans in them, and those areas voted for Trump, giving a map with vast swaths of red and small enclaves of blue. While those maps may be accurate geographically, they are not accurate politically, because politics is about people, not land area. To combat these, I made a thing. It shows more or less where people voted each way, but in a population-proportional way. The population normalization causes the states to look weird, but they are mostly in contact with their correct neighbors. Feel free to repost as needed.

Well, the Right will get to see what happens when they actually get to implement their policies. If we can survive, we'll have a clear record of disasters to point to for the rest of our lives. They will control all three branches of government, so they won't have anyone else to blame for the horrible outcomes. As they allow corporations to control more of their lives, and as prices rise for everything due to trade wars, and as we are opposed across the world, there will be negative outcomes for his supporters. As he fails to deliver on his crazy promises, there will be negative outcomes. They won't be able to blame it on "liberals".

I just don't want to see his face for the next four years. That is a huge price to pay for the privilege of saying "I told you so", not to mention all the other horribleness.

This is my conclusion, and it's a cynical one: the only way to win the US Presidency in modern times is to be more entertaining/charismatic than the opponent. I think that this goes back a long way, to Reagan:
1980: REAGAN vs Carter
1984: REAGAN vs Mondale
1988: BUSH SR vs Dukakis (hard to call this one, but I stand by Bush being more charismatic)
1992: CLINTON vs Bush Sr.
1996: CLINTON vs Dole
2000: BUSH JR vs Gore
2004: BUSH JR vs Kerry
2008: OBAMA vs McCain (also kind of hard to call, but I stand by this one, too)
2012: OBAMA vs Romney
and now, probably: Trump vs. Hilary. It's hard to argue that Trump isn't way more entertaining than Hilary.

I'm too young to remember what Carter and Ford looked like, but maybe this goes back further.

Democrats need to learn this lesson.

At this time of the quadrennium, I hear lots of friends and family crying "No more politics, please!" This, I claim, is bad for our society.

While we certainly need less name-calling, we need more, not less political discussion, especially with those who disagree with us. It is only through vigorous (but respectful) discussion that we can all move towards a better society.

You may have noticed that our society has become more politically polarized in recent years. I believe that this is because we interact less with those who disagree with us, and that when we do interact with people of politically different viewpoints, we are careful not to talk politics lest we rock the boat socially. There is some evidence to back up this increased isolation and polarization (http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/06/12/7-things-to-know-about-polarization-in-america/), although I wouldn't say it's conclusive.

Because of the (correlational) link between isolation and polarization, and the pernicious effects of polarization in our society, I value my interactions with those conservatives I meet in life and online, and try to preserve an atmosphere conducive to thoughtful, preferably evidence-based discussion.

If you are a person who never has political arguments, you might be part of the problem we are having in America.

With all due respect to the many horrified demographics (women, people of color, disabled persons, non-Christians,...) I think the issue described in this article is the worst and most frightening part of Trump: his lack of respect for democratic institutions. Any other aspects of Trump's campaign and (please, God, no) presidency can be fixed in the future, but if he erodes the democratic foundations of our nation's political system, we could be over.

This talk about putting your political opponents in jail does not belong in our democracy. Trump is working to put an end to our political system to benefit himself. It's clear he is taking lessons from his BFF in the Kremlin.

Can I just point out how awesome it is that this horrible video came out two days before the next debate? I just cannot fucking WAIT to see him face down women in the town hall as he is asked about this.
At the same time, while I will gleefully celebrate anything that keeps this guy from the Oval Office, I would prefer that he lose over policy instead of moral turpitude. I don't think that our modern trend of requiring our leaders to be angelic is a good thing. I wonder what Kennedy might have said among his buddies? Probably not as bad as this, but...pretty bad, I bet.

I don't think Kaine is doing well on all this Russia stuff. He's not willing to talk about exerting strength, which is what America wants to hear about Russian aggression.

Come on, Kaine. You can't use the tax thing to make an argument about using military force abroad. That's lame.

I think that Pence might be a little less polite than Kaine (interrupting more, and going over his time a little more), but doesn't it seem like the moderator is cutting him off more than she's cutting off Kaine?

Oh, man. This I can hardly believe. Pennsylvania is just fucking ASKING to be hacked. Not only do they have electronic voting machines which do not produce a paper record, and whose results can therefore be altered without anybody being able to tell after the fact, but the machines are running Windows XP! Windows XP is so unbelievably hackable that it is just horrifying for anybody who cares about stuff like, um, democracy.
Electronic voting is great, but there must be a human- and computer-readable paper record for each vote, which the voter checks for accuracy before they drop it in the box.

I appreciate good design. A thing that does its job well is a joy to me, and allows me to believe, just for a moment, that we live in a world and society that makes sense. Today I put together an IKEA desk, and although there a lots of clever little bits in there, I was most impressed by...the box. You know how typically when you purchase some large thing, you have to cut the packing tape, possibly remove big fat staples from the cardboard, and remove all the padding, and then excavate all the pieces? And you have this big monstrosity of a box in the way until you've got all the piece out? This was not like that The box had just enough glue to stay closed, but not so much you needed scissors or a box cutter to open it. If you just pulled it apart, the top came free and the bottom opened like a flower to reveal the parts inside. Didn't have to cut any tape or cardboard to get at the parts. It was such a pleasant surprise. The desk was in two parts, so I had Laurel film the opening of the second box. (Yes, I do realize this makes me a nerd, and that this post will probably reduce the likelihood I'll ever go out on a date again. 😊 ) (If you also think this kind of thing is cool, you should check out https://www.facebook.com/99percentinvisible)

So, this piece gave me pause. But I wonder what you all think. I'm not that worried, actually. I don't think our country has really changed that much. I think that Trump's win owes a lot to the particulars of this Republican field, in which all the forces of the conservative movement were focused for so long on the various more-or-less-equally qualified mainstream candidates, that Trump waltzed in at the end. Remember that Trump did *not* win a majority of Republican votes, only a plurality.
In the future, I don't think a Trumpian candidate will be so ignored at the outset. I think there will be a serious effort to winnow the field early on, and demagogues will go the way of fringe candidates in the past. What do you think?

There are some liberals out there saying things like "A vote for a third party candidate is a vote for Trump", or "I don't consider it a vote for Hillary; I consider it a vote for [the environment, or some other cause Trump doesn't support]". While these sentiments may be true, they want you to hold your nose and vote for Hillary. I want to say clearly that I actively support Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton isn't perfect, but then neither were any of the other Democrats I've supported in the past. She does, however, have far more experience at the upper levels of government than most of them did. Remember how Obama basically flailed around for part of his first term getting beaten up by Republicans while he tried to compromise and get them to play nice? He got things done in spite of that idealism, not because of it, I would say. Hilary knows what to expect.

Sure, Hillary is a center-left Democrat, but she's clearly to the left of one very popular modern Democratic president: Bill Clinton. We liberals basically like him, I'd judge. Overall, I think she's about the same on the left-right spectrum as Obama. More liberal on some issues, less on others. Are we lamenting that she's not as far to the left as Sanders? If so, I'd say that's kind of dumb. Should we deny her our support because somebody else didn't win the nomination? I caucused for Sanders, and would have been glad if he had won, but if we take a look at Hillary for her positions and abilities (i.e., judging her for who she is and not for who she isn't), I think she looks pretty darn good.

Imagine for a minute that this Democratic race was between only Hillary and Martin O'Malley. Hillary prevails over the center-left O'Malley because of his weak record on the environment, and emerges victorious after about half the primaries are over. Think for a minute about what your attitude would be towards her if she had beaten only Martin O'Malley, and not Sanders as well. If she seems better in that light, then you are letting context cloud your judgement of her merits.

Hillary Clinton will, I believe, stand up for lower- and middle-class Americans. She will pursue issues of civil rights and social justice, as she has for a long time. She will support the environment, and science. She will probably be more aggressive militarily than I would prefer, but that will likely be balanced by excellent diplomatic efforts. She will probably do a better job building bridges with opponents than Obama did, based on her record in the Senate.

Finally, think about how proud you were that we Democrats were able to put into office the first African-American president. Why the hell aren't you just as proud and excited to put the first woman into office as well? Isn't that a freaking awesome prospect?

So, I am not going to reluctantly vote for Hillary. I am going to enthusiastically vote for Hillary, and you should, too.

This is good to see. I'm not sure it will do anything, but I applaud the Senate Democrats for holding an actual talking filibuster to prevent anything from getting done unless the Senate votes on these two, tiny little baby steps towards a more sensible gun policy.

I'm relieved that my (gay) friend Guillermo who lives in Orlando, is safe today. I'm appalled that acts of hate-motivated gun violence are still happening on a regular basis in this country. Let's repeal/change the second amendment already!

Happy birthday, Kyle! Hope it's a great year.
So...today Sawyer asked me why this book had no cover (and by extension, "Why are you keeping an old cover-less book, Dad?"). I told him a bit about Boy Scouts, and ranks, and merit badges. Showed him my pages where I had gotten signed off on various items in January of 1981 at the age of 11. We talked about what is involved in Scouting, and Cub Scouts vs. Boy Scouts. He is now interested in Scouting. Not sure if it's for its own sake, or because I did it.
I have been deeply ambivalent about the Boy Scouts of America for a long time, and remain so. Their steps towards ethical policies regarding LGBT boys and leaders are halting, and grudging at best, largely because the BSA is beholden to the LDS church, which provides the bulk of their membership.
That said, I am considering letting him join a Cub pack. We'll see...

I came across this after watching a Ted talk on city flags (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnv5iKB2hl4). This proposed flag is very good, IMO. It should be officially adopted!

After introducing my brother and Ami to him, I'm again going through some great Tim Minchin stuff. The guy is a music & comedy genius.

Good to hear! I've been skipping breakfast for most of the past 18 months. And lunch. And doing just fine, thanks.
